(AN photo by Salman Marzouki) JEDDAH, 1 February 2006 - Around 2.97 million Umrah pilgrims arrived in 2005, according to a senior travel executive. "The number was 11 percent more than the number in 2004, but in 2006 we estimate a 20 percent jump in Umrah arrivals," Tarek A. Hefni, general manager of the Jeddah-based Bab Al-Umra, told Arab News yesterday on the sidelines of the annual awards ceremony. The awards were given to Umrah operators. The Top 10 countries ranked for Umrah pilgrim arrivals include Egypt (683,434), Iran, (471,799), Pakistan (391,115), Syria (198,488), Yemen (172,995), Jordan (156,809), Turkey (121,135), India (91,026), Algeria (85,367) and Sudan (83,798). Some of the representatives of 75 Umrah companies from Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah, who were present, received their awards and recognition certificates from Hefni. Bab Al-Umra, which carries the slogan "Your Gateway to Umrah," is an online application, which facilitates the registration and tracking of Umrah pilgrims through a secured system and guarantees the electronic flow of data between the local Umrah operators and service suppliers across the Kingdom and overseas as well as various government bodies. It operates with international partners from Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Yemen, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the UK/Europe and North and South America. The online service is the product of Al-Alamiah's two-decade-old pioneering role in IT, computer business and network solutions across the Kingdom, Hefni said in his presentation. "Al-Alamiah.net, a member of Al-Alamiah Group, has capitalized on its vast capabilities of the e-commerce, Internet applications and integration services to develop Bab Al-Umra (www.babalumra.com)," he said. "We chose Bab Al-Umra as the name for our system, as it literally means the gateway to Umrah," Hefni said, adding that it meets the requirements of the Ministry of Haj and sets an example as to how modern technologies can strengthen the Islamic culture and heritage all over the world. Hefni said Bab Al-Umra had developed a combined strategy based on customer care, international marketing, and franchising partners. The Bab Al-Umra system is an application in which different entities log into the system and use the Internet as a communication media. "Based on this system, we've developed a very rugged security model to control the authentication and authorization functions to determine exactly who does and doesn't have the right to access the system and to protect the data flow over the system," Hefni added. The system and its different interface levels are designed to be user-friendly and enable users to save time in managing potential and complex requests. Its multilingual interface application allows users all over the world to interact with it. The logical path of the system starts when the Umrah operator creates an Umrah package, which is made up of accommodation, transportation, catering and additional services, such as medical insurance. The Umrah operator then defines the prices of that package and sends it to Bab Al-Umra, which in turn forwards it to the Ministry of Haj for approval. It is only when the ministry approves this packages that the Umrah operator offers the package to its external agent outside the Kingdom. The agent then starts creating groups of pilgrims for that package and enters their relevant details into the system.
