Journalist Jill Carroll Released in Iraq
By Jonathan Finer
Washington Post Foreign Service

BAGHDAD, March 30 -- American journalist Jill Carroll, who had been held
hostage by insurgents in Iraq, was freed Thursday in Baghdad after nearly three
months in captivity.
Carroll, 28, was turned over to an Iraqi political party and seen by Washington
Post reporters.
The freelance journalist, who worked for the Christian Science Monitor, was
kidnapped Jan. 7 by gunmen in Baghdad as she was being driven to an interview.
Her interpreter, Allan Enwiyah, 32, was killed in the encounter.
Her captors identified themselves as the Vengeance Brigade, a group that had
not surfaced before Carroll's abduction. On. Jan. 17 the brigade released a
video in which it threatened to kill her in three days unless U.S. authorities
released all female detainees in Iraq. A second video, aired on Jan. 30, showed
Carroll in a head scarf, sobbing, but her voice was not heard.
In a third video, released on Feb. 9, Carroll asked officials to comply with
her captors' demands "as quickly as possible" because "there is a very short
time."
On Jan. 26, U.S. officials released five of the nine women it had said were
being held in detention centers, but said the release came after a normal
review of the cases. They denied that it was related to Carroll's abduction.
Carroll's parents and twin sister have made repeated appeals for her release on
Arab television stations, including a new one by her sister Wednesday.
About 425 foreigners have been kidnapped in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in
2003, according to U.S. officials. Abductions of foreigners have grown more
frequent in recent months.
Three kidnapped Christian peace activists who had been held since November were
rescued last week by British and U.S. troops after they received a tip from two
men detained by U.S. forces. A fourth member of their group, Tom Fox of Clear
Brook, Va., was shot and killed earlier.
