Impotency drug banned

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has banned local traditional medicine
Orgacare Unik Plus-1 as it contains restricted chemical substances to treat
impotency that can be harmful.
The product was deregistered after it was found to have been adulterated with
tadalafil and sildenafil (viagra), drugs that can only be prescribed by doctors
for men diagnosed with erectile dysfunction.
DEREGISTERED: Organcare Unik Plus-1 was found to have been adultered with
tadalifi and slidenafil.
Health Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek said in a statement yesterday that the
drugs could have harmful effects, especially to those with a heart condition
and diabetes.
He said the Drug Control Authority (DCA) had advised the public against buying
and using the product as tests found it had been tainted with tadalafil, an
ingredient not allowed to be used in traditional medicine, and which could be
deleterious to health.
"Through a post-market surveillance programme, the DCA identified that this
product had been adulterated with tadalafil," he added.
Following the slimming pill issue previously, where several traditional
medicines were found to be adulterated, he said more product sampling and
monitoring were being carried out on traditional medicines bearing claims for
men's health.
Chua said the DCA had a good networking system with regulatory agencies in
other countries.
"The ministry has received information from regulatory agencies elsewhere that
Orgacare Unik Plus-1 imported from Malaysia tested positive for sildenafil and
tadalafil, which are classified as poisons.
"These drugs can interact with other medicines resulting in serious adverse
effects, such as the lowering of blood pressure, if used together with some
anti-hypertensive drugs," he added.
Those in possession of the products are advised to immediately cease selling,
distributing or using them.
The ministry also reminded sellers that possession for sale of these products
was an offence under the Control of Drug and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.
"Any individual who commits an offence can be fined up to RM25,000 or sentenced
to a jail term not exceeding three years or both for the first offence, and a
fine not exceeding RM50,000 or jail sentence not exceeding five years for the
second or subsequent offences," Dr Chua warned.
"A company found guilty can be fined up to RM50,000 for the first offence and
up to a maximum of RM100,000 for the second or subsequent offences."
A check on the Internet showed that the Hong Kong health authorities had issued
a warning on it on Jan 6.
