Electrogenic groups to generate one million kilowatts in the country
. Equivalent to 3.3 thermoelectric plants similar to the Antonio Guiteras in
Matanzas

PRESIDENT Fidel Castro Ruz has confirmed that electricity generation on the
island is to be based on electrogenic groups, given their lower cost and
greater efficiency.
Speaking on the Cuban TV "Informative Roundtable" program he confirmed that by
next May Day the island's coordinated electrogenic groups will be generating
one million kilowatts on account of the energy revolution being applied in the
country. This is equivalent to 3.3 thermoelectric plants similar in size to the
Antonio Guiteras one located in Matanzas province.
He noted that there could be lack of electric power due to unforeseen causes
but not due to insufficient capacity, giving as an example Pinar del Río
province, where the coordinated electrogenic groups are already functioning.
Via this productive method, family nuclei can resolve their energy needs,
replacing gas consumption by this energy source.
He explained that all the research and analyses effected with specialists in
the Electric Industry confirmed that with the new concept of electrogenic
groups installations could be constructed with greater rapidity, at lower cost
and with more efficiency than thermoelectric plants.
To illustrate his argument, Fidel gave an exhaustive analysis of the problems
of the Antonio Guiteras, a station with 330 megawatts of power and the most
modern in Cuba. He described each of the construction and mounting stages of
this plant which took seven years from the moment of signing the contract with
a French company to synchronizing it to generate electricity.
Fidel affirmed that they had had to break away from concepts established by
experts in the Cuban electrogenic system who thought that these groups couldn't
be synchronized and that discussions on the issue lasted for about three months.
"On the day that we managed to get the idea that the motors of the electrogenic
groups could be coordinated, the new energetic concept of the country replacing
the long-established opinion that the solution to Cuba's electricity problem
lay in giant nuclear and thermoelectric plants like the Antonio Guiteras, began
to appear."
Fidel also referred to the possibility of using alternative sources, basically
Aeolian and solar energy via panels of photovoltaic cells.
The Cuban president pointed out that in recent years, the only schools not to
suffer power cuts as a consequence of cyclones in the island's mountainous
areas were those using solar energy panels.
"That is one of the roads to follow if we want to take electricity to
individual units," he stated, moving on to inform the people of important
interchange negotiations to further explore the characteristics and technology
of independent electrogenic groups. Some large international companies
producing the motors had been invited to the country. He announced that, as an
initial stage, 50 emergency electrogenic groups were acquired; at a later date
200 synchronized groups; and then a further 780.
