Hey Massy!From my usability lecture: Minimise the user's memory load. Numbers are generally harder to remember than useful names. So in your example:
Nama> fxreg add 1891 compressor Nama> fxreg add 3309 hard_compressor Nama fxreg add etd stereo_delayIt's a little longer to type, but sticks better in the mind. Certainly one could use just a number, which would internally be stored as a string. But so the user has the choice to help her workflow and make Nama appear less frightning, especially when beginning. I don't mind my effects, but if you think, it would help you, I could certainly see a general use in that. One could for example create a standard fxreg to get newbies started, with all those compressors and all those delays, it's hard to decide, when being introduced to it all. :-)
