"The Fires Within"Jean Grey, Rachel Grey-Summers, Blaze, Emma Frost, Celeste, Mindee, and Phoebe Frost.
Strolling across the perfectly manicured lawn Rachel Anne Grey-Summers smiled as she watched her mother sitting on a bench beneath her favorite tree with Rachel’s new baby sister. It was strange to think of her mother having other children aside from her and her brother Nate, to know she had two more brothers and now a baby sister who’s lives they’d all totally missed out on, to know that their fathers weren’t her father, but if there was one thing she’d learned living at Xavier’s it was that families were made in the oddest ways.
“Hebrew names?” The young red-haired woman asked as she sat on the bench next to her mother. “We’re not Jewish.”
“No, but Erik is.” Jean said with a bright smile as she picked up the yellow legal pad she’d been jotting names down on. “I thought it would be nice to take that into consideration.”
Taking the pad from her mother Rachel started to scan the list of names. Picking up the pen that was on the other side of her mother’s lap the young woman started crossing names off. “No. Eww. No. Not a chance. Not in my life time. What do you want her picked on? This one’s a joke right? This one’s ok. Oh, this one’s nice.”
Jean watched in amusement as Rachel edited down the list of baby names, laughing softly at the comments, and then smiling down at the tiny being in her arms. It felt good to hold a baby in her arms again, really good.
“Ok, I got it.” Rachel said after several long moments of deep thought. “Naomi Kelila.”
“Beautiful perfection.” Jean mused as she glanced at the meanings she’d written down beside each name. “Oh, I like that, and I’m sure Erik will as well.”
Rachel beamed as she reached out to touch the baby’s cheek with the tips of her fingers. “I can’t believe you have a kid with Magneto. That’s even more weird then knowing you have sons with Charles and Uncle Logan.”
“It’s the Uncle Logan one that gets me most.” Jean confided. “Not that the idea of having a son with Charles or Erik isn’t any less mind blowing, but given our past, and my friendship with Ro, the Logan thing takes the prize.”
The girl, who looked a lot like her father but with her mother’s hair and eyes, nodded. “Is everything ok on that front? Ya know, with Uncle Logan and Aunt ‘Ro and all that?”
Jean nodded as she placed the baby in the stroller sitting beside the bench. “Of course it is, it’s a little strange, and we’re kind of walking on egg shells, but it’ll all be fine.”
From across the grounds Blaze hovered in the air watching his genetic with his infant sister, and the young woman who he sensed also held a piece of the flame. He watched them like a silent sentinel, listening to their conversation telepathically, and even nodded approval of the younger’s choice of name for the infant. He would have listened more, finding it interesting that his genetic had some past ties to Weapon X, but something else pulled at his attention.
How could this be? He asked himself as he headed towards this new sensation. More people with the fire inside? Three of them, but this was different somehow, the fire was different, it was incomplete. When he found the sources of the fire he blinked. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but he knew that it wasn’t three identical teenage blond girls sitting in lounge chairs by the pool.
“It’s rude to stare.” The three girls said together as they turned their heads to look up at the intrusion.
“I wasn‘t staring” Blaze said as he landed a few feet away from them. “I sensed something and came to see what, who, it was.”
Three heads titled to the said as three voices asked, “What was it you sensed?”
Blaze held is hand up, palm facing towards the girls, his fingers spread wide. “You hold pieces of the fire, of the Phoenix, but it feels wrong. You’ve done something to it.”
There were five of them once, at one point there’d even been a thousand, but now they were the only ones remaining and each of them held a tiny piece of the Phoenix force in their organic diamond hearts. “We have incased it within our hearts.” They said as one. “Forever sealed in diamond so it can do no further harm.”
Blaze blinked again, shock, anger, and confusion flashing in his eyes. “You’ve imprisoned it? Why?”
Three blond heads titled the other way. “To protect.” “To protect what?” The boy asked as he came closer to the three of them. “Everything.” They replied in unison. “Everyone.”Blaze walked right up to them, his hand held out again, his eyes closing. He could sense it, feel it pulsing within it’s prisons. It was unhappy, dim, in pain.
Celeste, Mindee, and Phoebe all gasped at the warm, painful, pull they felt inside. It felt as if something were tapping on their hearts the way someone would tap on fish tank glass. ~~STOP!~~
The boy staggered back. He wasn’t expecting such a strong telepathic blast. These girls were strong, and together they were stronger then even he was. Opening his eyes he looked at them, then at the one in the pale robin’s egg blue bikini. “You,” He pointed to her, “you are meant to be the host, the flame is yours, why is it imprisoned in the other two?”
“It is safer this way.” The three said together. Blaze groaned. “Do you have to do that?” “Do what?” The three said.“That speaking as one thing.” The boy complained before once again looking at the one in the middle. “What’s your name?”
“We are one,” The girls replied. “Three-in-one. The Stepford Cuckoos. Celeste, Mindee, Phoebe.”
Blaze rolled his eyes and sighed. “But which are you?”There was a long pause before the girl finally spoke up, and oddly, she spoke alone. “Celeste.”
“Celeste,” He repeated. “Why do you imprison the flame? Does it not feel as if you have cut off an arm? A part of your soul?”
“It is for the best.” They once again replied together. “It is safer this way.”
Blaze stepped closer to Celeste who was now standing with her sisters at her side. “Safer or easier?” He held out his hand, this time holding it close to the girl’s chest. “It’s in pain, it’s suffering, can’t you feel it?”
The girls gasped again and then replied. “We feel nothing.”And then it hit him, they truly did feeling nothing, he was getting no emotion what so ever from them. “How can you stand such a void?”
“It is for the best.” Celeste replied. “I, I am not strong enough alone.”“You are.” Blaze said, a soft smile on his lips. “You were chosen, not like me or the others we were born with the flame because our female genetic is the supreme host, but you, Celeste, you were chosen. I could release it, give you back the whole flame.”
“NO!”~NO!!~ Celeste roared as Blaze’s hand began to glow. “It must stay incased!”
Emma had felt the pain and fluttering of something from her girls and came running out of her office. ~~Girls? Girls what’s wrong?~~
Blaze smirked. “The Frost woman; you’re her daughters?”Three heads shook. “She is our mother, be we are not her daughters, we are her students. Her daughters are Briar Rose and Johari.”
He tried to read their minds but they were blocking him so he reached out to someone else’s, the Frost woman’s too was strong and well blocked, but her mate’s was not. “You are her daughters wouldn’t you like to know what it feels like? To once again call her mother?”
“GET AWAY FROM MY GIRLS!” Emma yelled as she sent out a telepathic blast so strong it sent the boy to his knees. ~~And stay out of my wife’s head you horrid little hooligan!~~
Blue eyes blazed as the boy’s head snapped up. “Can’t you sense her passion? Her emotion?” He asked the girls as he looked past the woman. “Such strong emotion for her daughters, for the one who left, for the infant, and for the three of you. Don’t you want to share those emotions? Feel them for yourselves?”
“You stay the hell away from my children.” Emma warmed the boy as she stood in front of the Cuckoos. “Or I’ll rewire your brain and turn you into a broken little dog.” Her voice was as hard and cold as her body which was now in her diamond form. “I don’t care who your parents are boy, you stay the hell away from my girls!”
He could feel her pushing him away mentally and was actually surprised by her power. The blond was a hell of lot more powerful then he’d given her credit for.
“Blaze?” Jean called out as she and Rachel came around the corner of the house. “Emma what’s going on?”
“Your son attacked my girls.” The blond seethed. “Keep him away from them Jean. I meant it.”
Before she could say anything Jean watched as Emma ushered the Cuckoos inside. Sighing she turned to Blaze. “What happened?”
“They’ve got the flame inside.” He panted as he held his head. “Imprisoned, inside, hurting it.”
Jean blinked. “Hurting it?”“It isn’t whole, been torn apart, it’s in pain.” He said as he caught his breath.
That had never accrued to Jean. She could sense the Phoenix force inside the girls, but nothing like this. “Are you alright, Blaze?”
He nodded. “She’s a lot strong then she looks.”Rachel smirked as she cuddled her baby sister protectively in her arms. “Third strongest telepath in the world. Mom’s the first, the Professor’s the second. Betsy and I round off the top five, though we might have to do a bit of reranking with you and Cuckoos around.”
He smirked at that, he wouldn’t mind finding out where he ranked on that scale, but he wouldn’t want anyone else to know. Turning to look at his mother he demeaned, “What are you going to do about the flames?”
“What am I going to do?” Jean asked.Blaze nodded. “You are the supreme host, you are responsible for the force, that piece of it is in pain.”
“There’s nothing I can do, Blaze.” Jean told him softly. “Celeste incased those fragments within herself and her sisters and only she can undo it. We’re not even sure if she can or not.” She expected him to argue to be angry to shout so when the boy simply took off and flew away she knew it wasn’t a good sign. “Blaze? Blaze!?”
Imprisonment was wrong. The sacrifice Celeste had made, the burden she placed on her sisters, were wrong. And she was to pretty to suffer so much, he had to help. He had to find a way to fix it.
