One more thing I thought of...
Under Print and Fax in system prefs, when you hit the + to add a new
printer, the dialog opens with the icons like Default, Fax, IP,
Windows etc.
this tool bar can be customized like any OS X tool bar by right
clicking (Control Click if you have a one button mouse) and Choosing
Customize Toolbar... .
try dragging the fax icon onto your tool bar (or the default set) onto
the toolbar and hi Done
then try choosing Fax and selecting your modem
