It would be either a cable modem or a DSL modem.  Not the modem that  
came with your computer which is for regular phone lines and faxing.   
AIM stands for America On-Line (AOL) Instant Messenger.  It is  
possible to get a free user name and then use text 'chatting', voice  
'chatting', and video (if you both have a good enough internet  
connection) with other PC and Mac users.  iChat works well for this.   
There is a lot of information in iChat's help and in Apple's support  
site.

If your PC using family insist on using MSN (Microsoft's instant  
messaging client), there is a Mac client available that supports  
video (I haven't used it) here:

This page includes detailed instructions, please read and follow  
them.  Ask questions if you have them.  Getting this to work is not  
rocket science, but it isn't a "one click to satisfaction" process  
either.
