Ideally you should upgrade to the same system as your other machine,  
which I think is 10.3.9, although it may even be the current 10.4  
(Tiger).
BTW all, I have just finished the current "Mac|Life" magazine which  
has an interesting article regarding upgrading prior to "Leopard",  
the next pussy cat.
