[muglo] reverse sync?

All my iBook's preference settings vanished yesterday, somehow taking
my last week's worth of iStore music purchases with them. My backup
drive restored nearly everything, but its last update was a week ago,
so the iStore downloads weren't backed up. Apple doesn't allow
purchased tunes to be downloaded a second time without a second
payment. 
A question, therefore:
The tunes having been already transferred to an iPod, is it possible to
reverse the normal order of things and sync the computer from the iPod?
Apple appears to offer no guidance about this.
