Ted, if you haven't fixed it by now:
1. Hold down command-option before (and after) the Finder loads at boot
until you are asked to rebuild the desktop.
2. Try holding down the shift-key at boot to disable extensions/control
panels.
If this fixes it then one of your extensions/control panels is corrupt or
the prefs file that goes with it is corrupt.
3. Move the Preferences folder out of the System Folder and restart. If this
fixes the problem, then it's a corrupt prefs files. if not, move the prefs
folder back into the system folder (removing the newly created folder) and
restart.
4. Replace the Finder with another Finder (same version). The way to do this
is to move the current finder out of the system folder and to copy/move
another finder into its place -- restart. if that fixes it it was the
finder. If you're adventurous you could do the same thing to the System. (oh
how I love OS X -- no such troubleshooting headaches ;P
