First, create an archive of all the backup files!

1. Select the directory (or files) to be stored in the Finder.
2. From the File menu, select 'Create Archive of # of items'

This means that you now have an archived copy of the files in case
something goes awry.

Then... use whatever suggestions people here dream up.
