First of all, type command-\ to hide/show the preview pane (I presume that's
what you mean with "Open it").
You could also try Edit:Preferences (command-;). Then go to the Display
preferences pane and unselect "Show attached pictures in messages" (this may
also be causing you problems).
Finally, if you don't want to have Outlook Express download pictures in HTML
e-mails (which, btw I hate... HTML e-mails that is), open up Internet
Explorer 5.x and turn off the loading of images there (or, if you keep the
Explorer control panel, you can turn off the loading of images there).
One thought I had for people who do use Outlook Express but do not use
Internet Explorer... make sure you have Internet Explorer on your machine,
open it up, turn off the loading of images (make sure not to tell it to
become your default), and, voila, Outlook Express won't load images anymore!
PS The complaints that IE highjacks the default browser setting are
_nonsense_ (I'm not going to mince words on that one) -- I have had more
problems with Netscrape 4.x than I have with IE. *Only* if you tell IE to be
your default browser *and* tell it to keep checking (when it first opens)
will it make sure that it's the default when it's opened (for me no problem
since it is my OS 9 default ;)). If IE keeps setting itself as default
that's the user's doing (with the exception of the 5.1.5 (for OS X) upgrade
which decided to reset your default homepage).
In theory I thought that Netscrape 4.x did the same thing, but I recently
had Netscrape 4.8 highjack the default settings (WITHOUT being told to do so
by me) after having 4.7.x sitting idle, and coexisting with *real* browsers
like Opera, IE, and iCab for years.
