[muglo] Re: printer

My old HP DeskWriter 550C always changed the print head with the cartridge.
When I'd take off each cartridge at the end of it's life, there was dried
ink caked on the print head. Occasionally, the black cartridge would totally
plug before the cartridge was empty.

My Canon i9100 changes only the individual ink cartridges (more economical).
I recently had to pull out the print head for inspection (after hundreds of
prints) and the print head was as clean as the day it was installed.

Obviously the difference is the constituency of the ink. The HP ink, I
suspect was a pigment ink with particulate matter suspended in a solution.
It was waterproof on all surfaces, including the print head so replacement
was a necessity. Even the most delicate attempts to clean the head, resulted
in more jets being plugged.

The i9100 has 3072 individual ink nozzles in about a one square inch area,
so having an ink that is trouble free is essential, since it costs about
$300 to replace the print head (about half the cost of the printer)! I think
the Canon ink is a dye-based ink. It isn't waterproof, except on certain
substrates, such as the Canon professional papers. It seems to have little
tendency to clog. I've only had one nozzle clog and it eventually cleared
itself with a good cleaning.

Alignment is a unitary event if you are only changing the ink cartridges.
But for units that change the print heads with every cartridge, the
alignment process can be the difference between very high quality and so-so
quality, if the black nozzles don't know where the colour nozzles are. Not
much point in purchasing a high resolution print head then not get the
resolution that it can provide. My son's young eyes see mis-registrations
that I can hardly pick out with a loupe, so if you don't align your
cartridges, make sure you only show your prints to old friends! :-)
