You've got an extra step in there with the File menu Jim.
Before you click on the attachment, hold down your Control key on your
keyboard, then click on the attachment. This should bring up a small
pop-up menu, and one of the choices will be "Open With". Click on
"Open With" and hold your mouse there. Another menu will pop out to
the side showing the list of programs you can use to open the
attachment. One of those should be Preview. If you don't see Preview,
you will see the word "Other" at the bottom of the list. Click on
"Other". You will see a new window open up that allows you to look
through your hard drive. Navigate to the Applications folder and
scroll down through your list of applications to find Preview. Select
it, then click the "Open" button. That should open the attachment with
Preview.
If you can't find Preview, then try doing a search in a Finder window
(or use Spotlight if you have Mac OS 10.4) for "Preview" to see where
it may have been misplaced. If you find it, drag it back to the
Applications folder where it belongs. Follow the steps above again,
choose "Other", then navigate to Preview which should now be in your
Applications folder, click the "Open" button, and you should be able
to open the attached picture.
As Ross points out, it would be helpful to know what kind of picture
we are dealing with. Is it a .jpg, .gif, or .tiff file? Check the
attachment's filename to find out. If it is something other than the
common images types I just listed then Preview may not be able to open
it. Let us know what the file's name is and we may be able to suggest
a different program.
As Dean points out, your computer may not know to use Preview for
opening pictures, so you may need to set Preview to be the default
application for opening images. To do this, click once (to select) on
an image file on your hard drive that ends with .jpg. Then click on
the File menu and choose Get Info. In the window that pops up, look
for "Open With". If Preview isn't listed as the default application
then choose it from the drop-down list of applications (or hunt for it
on your hard drive using "Other)". Once Preview is listed, click the
"Change All..." button to make Preview the default application for
opening all files that end with .gif. Do the same for a file that ends
with .gif and .tiff and you should be all set.
