Not as different as you may think & I think Doug's post elucidates
somewhat. We used to Defrag when drives got slow because the ran out
of space, but the drives were then in Megs, such as 32 Meg. When
larger 80 Meg + came out they had enough space for programmes to
write a new copy of the file & then destroying the old one. Memory
cost was a primary cause of Mac programmes using so much less memory
than IBM ones initially, even to this day so defragging was not an
issue on Macs, although it became a cash cow for Norton as many users
also worked on IBMs at work, so were used to doing it. HTH.
