[muglo] passwords

A curious nuisance: Very often lately, when I log on, the system will
ask for my password twice. At first, I thought this was just a
continuation of the old problem I used to have, of starting to type it
as soon as the password space appeared, before the computer was ready
for it and had got around to setting the cursor there. I'd broken
myself of that habit and got used to waiting for the cursor to flash,
and for a while the annoyance ceased. But it's back, intermittently,
and I thought perhaps I was just growing impatient again and jumping
the gun as I used to. However, I've begun taking care NOT to do so, and
still the machine asks for a second input. Not always, but sometimes.
Within the last couple of months or so, Rogers/Yahoo/Flickr has begun
doing it too. Different password, same issue. I'm not being told that
the password was wrong (although I very occasionally get that too,
despite having carefully verified that it wasn't); I'm just being asked
to type it again, as if I hadn't already done so.
Anybody else getting this? And anybody got any ideas why?
