You have removed the icon from the Finder window view, not from the  
hard drive.

Open a new Finder window, navigate to a window view that shows the  
icon you want and click and drag it into the sidebar. When you do this  
you will get a selection if you hit a folder, or a line indicating you  
can drop the item at that location.

In the Finder Command-Shift-d will open a Finder view window at the  
Desktop level. That's Apple key, Shift key, d.
