hmmmm... I got an alert that said:
"Song Name" could not be converted because protected files cannot be  
converted to other formats.
I knew this wasn't possible to convert from AAC directly to MP3, but  
I figured your suggested method worked. No go.
Usually what I do is burn an Audio CD from the AACs that I bought,  
then delete the AACs and re-import the CD as MP3 files. This strips  
the protection nicely. I *used to* use j-hymn http://hymn-project.org  
until it was disabled with the iTunes 6 upgrade.
