Hi Doug
I have two Skype accounts, one I run on my MacBook Pro and the other
one on a Phillips standalone phone, no computer needed.

This phone works like a regular landline except you can't make 911
calls and you don't dial 1 for long distance.
Both accounts allow me to call regular phones, on the Philips phone I
have $30 or $40 annual cost account that allows unlimited free North
American calling and I have $15 Skype credit for calling outside North
America. Costs about 2¢ a minute to any U.K. number except cell
number which cost more. The MacBook Pro just has Skype credits and I
use it when we stay in hotels to get around the high phone costs
hotels charge to your bill, I think I originally bought 15 Euros and
have phoned Canada from Germany several times, made German calls while
there and let a friend make a 15 minute call to New York City from
Germany. The quality is comparable to cell phones. The credits you
buy don't expire as long as you make at least one call every 6 months.
