I recently bought a panasonic AVCHD camera which shoots in HD on a  
memory card, no tapes required. Records about 45 minutes on the  
included card and the footage can be injested into the latest versions  
of Imovie and Final Cut Pro. The best thing is that the camera allows  
instant access to scenes and playback.

It's the most idiot proof camera I've ever owned - it is also a  
digital camera. I believe it is called the SD5.
It's close to $800 but well worth it if you want a tiny yet powerful  
camera.

AVCHD is a great format. Everything is 16x9. Not quite as high quality  
as HDV but it doesn't have the drop out issues that HDV has.
