Biggest advantages IMO = low energy use & compact. Some people like the
picture quality of a LCD over that of a CRT, others hate it. You really
should go out and look at the LCD you want before buying. Does it wreak
havoc with your eyes? Is it sharp enough (I find I'm slightly disappointed
by Apple's (& others) larger LCDs -- they just aren't as sharp as comparably
sized CRTs)?
A MAJOR drawback to LCDs is that you're stuck with one screen size!!! Yes,
you can change the screen size, but the quality of resultant image is
mediocre at best and unusable at worst (imagine what it feels like to scale
a 640x480 picture up to 2048x1536 and that's what it'll feel like if you run
a 21" LCD at 1024x768). You can't change resolutions like you can with a CRT
(so if you're like me you'll be a touch out of luck).
As a laptop user I have to admit I'm hooked on LCDs for the compactness and
as an environmentally conscious individual for their energy use. If I ever
needed an external monitor for my computer I'd only ever consider a LCD now
(I like compact things). However, I must warn you that LCDs aren't for
everyone. I've never been overly impressed by the brightness of LCDs. Newer
LCDs are a little better but I find they just can't match a good CRT (like
LaCie's Electron series... which, btw cost less than LCDs of the same size)
in a bright room.

In Toronto I saw 15" LCDs ~$300 (not bad clarity) in August, and decent
quality screens (as clear as Apple's IMO) were ~$400. $500-700 for 17". I
imagine prices are a touch lower now. (even here in the UK LCDs are starting
b/t £200-300 & things are damned expensive here... tax rates roughly
comparable (15 vs 17... ironically, gov't services in Canada seem to be
better funded (& more effective)... especialy publicly funded education)).
