[muglo] Re: modem

I suspect that so few people use modems nowadays that it's yet another
one of those "cost savings" measures (otherwise "the rest of us" pay
extra to have the modems in the machines). And, it seems kind of silly
to have such a powerful machine on your desk but to cripple it with
dial-up.

Plus, if you can afford to drop $2K on an iMac*, you can also afford
high speed internet of some description. $30 for low speed "high
speed" vs. $15 for dial-up. That's only an extra $200/year, not even
10% of the cost of the iMac.

*The economics of computing has changed dramatically since the iMac
was first released. For most of Apple's history you've had to plunk
down around $2K to get a semi-functional and semi-current
bottom-of-the-line Mac (i.e. students). Now, you can get a full-blown
laptop for less and you can get a fully decked out desktop for under
$1K, and, if you're lucky a laptop for ~$1K

But, it is interesting to note what the death of the modem means. They
still serve a purpose for faxing and in high-speed "emergiencies"
(when your high speed is down ;-).
