I think that's what's happening here. Websites and developers keep 
using the newer versions of Shockwave which means older ones can't run 
some of the content. Updating software for older an older OS (read OS 
9) is not a huge priority so it looks like oS X is the way to go.

Depends on what you mean by useable.  I'm running OS X 10.3.9 on a 1998 
computer although with a bit of a cpu upgrade.  Try running Win XP on a 
1998 computer and tell if its useable.  I think I may be able to run 
10.5 on this machine.  Try doing Vista on your old machine - then again 
maybe not!
