To answer the questions in reverse order, Roy (and by the way, welcome
to the group), the meetings are whenever anyone gets around to
organizing them. The last one was in March; since then, we've just had
sporadic exchanges online. However, there's a real meeting next
Thursday, June 21, from 7:00 till 8:30 p.m., in the OSCO Community Room
at the Fred Landon Library branch, 196 Wortley Rd. I just organized it.
What's talked about? Whatever anyone wants to talk about. The March
meeting, I understand (I wasn't here then), included a presentation on
how to set up a personal Web site (I wish I HAD been here). Next
Thursday's is mainly about meeting other members (Ipersonally I've met
only a few) and reinforcing the impression that this IS a group (there
are numerous other recent members too, and online really hardly cuts it
when you don't know the people you're online with.
Apart from that, I'll have an Internet-ready laptop set up, loaded
with Web browsers, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, OmniPage, Graphic
Converter, iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand, Google Earth,
SuperDuper!, even AppleWorks for heaven's sake, and any Mac novice who
wants to learn the basics of any of them is welcome to crowd around,
see what's what and try them out. With any luck, a few Mac veterans
more proficient than me in some of these will take us beyond the
basics. (I've been at it for a couple of decades now, but the stuff
I've still to learn would fill an encyclopedia.)
Hah! And the first question: approximately how many muglo's come out to
meetings? Well, we'll see.
Here's the deal. No one on the executive has had time to put a June
meeting together, but as past president Paul Thomas pointed out in a
March e-mail, ?our Constitution still permits SIGs [(special-interest
groups), and] if a group of people want to form such a group this can
be done if they can arrange a meeting place without cost to MUGLO.?
Okay, I've booked and paid for the OSCO Communithy Room at the Landon
library branch myself, so there's no cost to MUGLO. If other members
show up, we're a special-interest group -- our special interest in this
case being the holding of at least a few face-to-face interactive
meetings a year at which we can share information, expertise and
friendship. If nobody appears, no sweat; I'll have a quiet room to
myself for an hour and a half, in which to chip away at a few more
mysteries of Photoshop.
Why this? Because nobody else is doing it.
Why the Landon library? Because it's one of four branches that are
relatively central (Central, Crouch, and Carson being the others), so
accessibility is about the same for any member. Also, it has the least
expensive decent-sized meeting room. Twenty-five bucks for a room that
can accommodate 35 people? Can't beat that. If I'm out to lunch on this
and nobody shows, I'm out of pocket for less money than I could blow in
a bar in half an hour. If a dozen members come and are willing to kick
in two bucks apiece, it would cover expenses and leave a few dollars
over to donate to the library. Couldn't ask for a better cause.
Why next Thursday? It has to be some time. Some members won't be able
to make it on a Thursday. Some won't be able to make it no matter what
day of the week is named. There was no point in calling for suggestions
and a vote; look how many people have replied to the call to nominate a
new executive or re-elect the incumbents. Is that a quorum?
Well, let's try it. The Landon branch, again, is at 196 Wortley Rd.,
just south of Bruce Street in Wortley Village. We've got from 7:00 till
8:30 (they're open till 9, but like to have users packed and ready to
go by then). Bring a laptop if you've got one.
Bring your camera, too, if you like. Larry Kryski did us a favour by
taking pictures of most of the people at the last meeting and putting
them on line to help members get to know one another. It's an example
worth following up.
See you there, I hope.
