I reread the post and you are saying the white light stayed on means  
you did not give the computer a chance to power down completely.   
After clicking on Shut Down you can't close  the lid till the  
computer has actually turned off other wise it will go into sleep  
mode.  Turning the computer off by holding down the computer should  
only be done as a last resort.
