While Gerhard had some good advice, it sounds to me that your  
computer is not turning off. The little light at the front is a  
reminder that the laptop is still on & when you open the lid that  
light should go out. Pressing the power button will do nothing in  
this situation, unless you keep it pressed for a couple of minutes or  
more, which should turn it off, or restart it.
You don't say which model it is, always important, & is it a new  
Macbook, or an older iBook, or Powerbook? Was it plugged into power,  
or running on battery?
BTW removing the battery in the above situation will return the  
laptop to idle. HTH.
