It sounds like it is overheating. When you put it down it is not on
a blanket or couch or something that doesn't allow air to pass under
it? Are the little rubber feet missing? These keep the computer
high enough to allow cooling air to pass under it. The computer will
have some vent openings make sure that they are not blocked by dust.
When the computer does get warm can you hear the fan cycle on, maybe
it is broken. Heat is a much bigger problem with laptops then
desktop systems and it is important to allow the cooling to take
place as efficiently as possible.
