Hi Susan,
    Legally he still should have original disks, or at least one, but I don't
think anyone at Apple really cares up to 8.0.
    I have a set of system 7 disks on 3.5" disks & a 7.6 CD. I keep such items
around for the older Macs that come to me, or require repairs.
    Can you ask what CPUs, Ram, HD, they have etc., then it would be easy to
determine what O/S would be best.
    7.55 is good & stable, 7.6 is okay, 8.0 needs to be 8.1, 8.6 is one of the
best. HTH.
