You will get roaming charges even with a cell phone, I imagine the
data plan would also cost extra when used in the U.S., so if you don't
want roaming charges you could only use it as an iPod and using WiFi
to get your e-mail. We like having meals on the road at Panera
Bakeries, ( http://www.panerabread.com/ ) good food, not the usual
fried stuff you get on the road and they have free WiFi, I don't know
if there are any on your route. I think roaming applies to incoming
calls as well but I think the charges are more reasonable than they
use to be.
My brother-in-law spends a lot of time in the states working, he has
an unlocked phone and just changes chips when he is in the states this
gives him a New York number and avoids roaming.
