Hi Paul,
Batteries like to be used. You will actually shorten the useful life
of your battery by leaving the power adapter plugged in "too much".
You should really only plug it in to charge the battery, or if you
are doing something disk-intensive (like watching a DVD movie or
using a processor-hungry app like Photoshop). And as often as
possible, run the laptop until the battery is almost dead.
The times displayed when the adapter is plugged into the iBook
represent "time til fully charged", while those displayed while it is
unplugged represent "time til fully drained". Of course, these are
only rough estimates that the computer calculates based on usage,
disk use, etc.
Hope this makes it a bit clearer for you.
