I've noticed that most (all of mine) DSL problems stem from one of two
things: 1. a regular modem/fax operating on the same line; 2. an improperly
installed filter that doesn't filter out voice calls properly (ALL
extensions need them).

I used to be a die-hard cable modem supporter but I've seen DSL do good work
too. In Toronto I had Toronto FreeNet ($40/mo) and did they ever provide
good service. I think they've upgraded the modems in their pool to 1.8 Mb or
something like that but I was still pretty happy with 1.3 Mbit since it
usually performed very well (except when someone was on the extension or
using a modem until I realised what was happening and set up that laptop
with a NIC (since you had to have Bell Canada as your voice provider (we
were with Sprint) we were piggy backing off the upstairs appartment).

Eric.
