Try some of these tactics:
First, run Apple's disk checking utility, Disk First Aid. Second, re-install
the virus scanning software.
Then,
(1) Startup your computer with the shift key held down (to disable
extensions) and run the scan
If that doesn't work,
(2) startup the computer with the boot floppy disk or CD provided with your
virus scanner (e.g. the SystemWorks CD if you are using Norton SystemWorks)
(if such a disk is available).
If that's not an option,
(3) startup the computer with the Mac OS CD and run the virus scanning
software off the HD.
Let us know what happens.
