[muglo] font frustration

I've just installed the OS 10.5. So far, except for the Time Machine function,
I've found nothing in it that justifies its having been written. Much of it
seems to be cosmetic smoke and mirrors that offer no productive benefit and
many of which are actually counterproductive, such as the silly Stacks feature
and the now less unobtrusive Dock. The irritant of the moment, prompting this
little rant, is that it has inexplicably rendered TextEdit incapable of
recognizing Zapf Dingbats, a font I have used regularly in more than 20 years'
worth of journals. The program will find Dingbats in its Fonts lookup, but
steadfastly declines to deploy it. Has anyone else run into this one?
Incidentally, OS 10.5 seems to thwart all efforts to make secondary backups
with the long-dependable SuperDuper! -- which I'd like to do in case Time
Machine turns out a few weeks from now to be as wonky as everything else in the
package.
