This is because you likely have aliases for every application you use  
right? If so...

My advice?

Clean out the dock and discover Quicksilver. Do you like Spotlight?  
Quicksilver is better.

I use Command-Spacebar to launch Quicksilver, type two or three  
characters and tap Enter. The app -- or whatever it is that  
Quicksilver finds, launches.
