Also, Theresa, it isn't clear whether the JPEGs you're producing are oversize
in their compressed JPEG form (the size you'd see if you did a Command-I on
them), or in the form they assume once they're opened in a program like
Photoshop.
For instance, I just picked one of my JPEGs at random and did a Get Info on it.
It's 484 kilobytes. But when I opened it in Photoshop, it was 5.66 megabytes.
The degree to which the JPEG format compresses images is variable, depending on
the sort of image you have; one with a whole lot of clear blue sky and just a
few distant trees will compress more than a shot of a forest interior. The
compression algorhythm says to itself: "Ho-hum, solid blue sky from here to
there, just the one setting will do for all of that; no need for any more
calculations (and disk space) till we get over into the foliage and things get
complicated again."
I presume the 1 megabyte limitation is on the JPEG compressed size. The only
way to meet that without sacrificing more resolution than you need is to see
how much over the limit each JPEG is, then open it in Photoshop, Photoshop
elements, GraphicConverter or whatever, see how big it is there, resize it by
an equivalent percentage, save and close it, then go back and do a Command-I on
the recompressed JPEG. After a little experimenting, you'll be able to come
pretty close with a single pass per image.
