[muglo] file corrupteded

I've got a TextEdit file, quite important (to me, at least), which has
somehow become impossible to open. Double-clicking on it brings up an
error message saying "The Document Blahblahblah could not be opened.
The file is not in the right format. The file might be corrupted,
truncated, or in a different format than you expect."

Doing a Command-i on it brings up information box showing it as a
TextEdit document, allegedy created and last modified on a date three
years back, which might just possibly be the last time I worked on it,
but certainly not the date it was created.

The file's original icon has been replaced by a grey credit-card shaped
ione with the word "exec" in green lettering in the upper left corner.

This isn't the first file that's gone this way. Three or four times
previously, it's happened to insignificant files, and I just junked
them. This one I'd like to save if at all possible. Does anyone know
what's causing the problem and whether it's correctable?
