Thanks, Chris. I managed to get into the file -- and several other
gummed-up ones -- by getting hold of TextWrangler as Doug Rogers
suggested. Extracting the contents was easy after that, although
pasting it into a new file was tricky. I'd copy it into a new TextEdit
file and it would be there until I saved and closed the file, but on
reopening the new file would be blank. The only solution I found was to
paste the material rescued by TextWrangler into a new TextEdit file,
then, before saving, copy it again from there into a second TextEdit
file, and save that. I think the second copying picked up the text in
temporarily uncorrupted TextEdit format, rather than the corrupt format
TextWrangler was passing along, which would have been confirmed as
corrupt in the first TextEdit file as soon as I went to save it.
