Yes, all you will need is an ethernet cable. I'd advise you to get a
"cross-over" cable but, since you have a G4 PowerBook (which version?) you
can use any ethernet cable (the G4 PBs auto-detect the cable wiring). If you
have a cable/ADSL modem that connects to your computer with an ethernet
cable you already have the requisite cable!

Hook the two computers together (make sure both are asleep when you plug in
-- not a safety issue but simply to make your life easier). Turn on file
sharing on whatever computer you want to use as the host. If you're using
the PB in 10.2.8 as the server, you'll have to open up the Preferences
Pane:Networking and note what IP addy is (auto) assigned to your PB. You
will then login to the PB from the iMac using "Connect to server..." (or
whatever the button reads) by entering the IP address as the server name.
Then enter your username and password and select the HD(s) or user account
you desire. Even if the PB appears in the Chooser:AppleShare device, do not
select it!

If you use the iMac as the server you won't have to login to the iMac from
the PB (running either OS X or OS 9) with an IP address.

You may find that you're more comfortable in OS 9. In this case, boot your
PB in OS 9 mode and set up file sharing (you won't have to enter the IP
address to login to the PB in this case).

Alternately, you can turn on the FTP server in OS X and login to the PB
using an FTP client on the iMac (of course, that too requires knowledge of
the PB's IP address).

PS In all of this, check the "Mac OS help", or check Apple's support
knowledge base (preferred) if you run into problems.

Eric.
