Hi Wendy
there's a few things you can try
try holding option down when selecting Empty Trash
restart the Mac and try emptying the trash
open the Trash select the item that won't delete, choose Get Info from
the File menu or Right click and choose Get info
if the item has the Locked box checked off in the resulting Get Info
Window, uncheck it and try emptying the trash again
if that fails, you can use a utility like Cocktail to force the mac to
delete the file (http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php)
In the Files Tab > Locked. Drag the item to the preview pane and
delete it from there
Good Luck!
