2 things

1. I have always had software update set to auto, to notify me of any 
software updates, which I always thought I was getting, but not so! 
Thanks to some MUGLO traffic, I figured out my M/S Office 2004 needed 
updating. It seems I was 7 upgrades behind. It took a while, but I'm 
up to date except for Office/08.

2. Once I updated to the Office 11.5.0 update sequence, by adding a 
converter, I am now able to translate the .docx files. Didn't have to 
go as far as Office/08 to get it, 7 was enough for 1 day, thanks
