Hi Alex, I would strongly suggest you do a little research on the web. I
typed in "OS X serial printing to imagewriter ii" into Hotline's little
"Search the web" thingy and pulled up a number of relevant sites.
This one is perhaps most useful:
<http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/imagewriter/>
Package notes:
imagewriter 1.2 January 28, 2003
The current ImageWriter driver supports printing via AppleTalk to an
AppleTalk-enabled ImageWriter II or ImageWriter LQ, and printing via a
supported serial port to all three models of Apple ImageWriter. Currently
only Keyspan USB-to-serial adapters offer fully supported serial ports. This
driver does not support color printing. (3 supported printers).
To begin printing to your ImageWriter from Mac OS X Jaguar just follow the
easy instructions below.
<snip>
Additionally, if you are using a Keyspan USB-to-serial adapter make sure
that you have installed the latest version of the Keyspan serial port
software (version 1.4 or later).
<snip>
The install requires 75 KB and includes the CUPS serial backend for Mac OS X
Jaguar, the cups-o-matic CUPS filter, and foomatic PPD files to support 3
printers.
Set Up Instructions
In general, deleting an existing printer queue is much easier than creating
a new, correctly configured queue. In that regard, this installer will
attempt to automatically create printer queues for all of the available
serial ports that it discovers (which is why you should plug in any
USB-to-serial adapters before continuing). If your Mac has any compatible
serial ports you may end up with several unnecessary queues. To remove any
unnecessary queue from the printer list simply select the queue within the
printer list window in Print Center and delete it.
If you ever delete an automatically created queue, and then later wish that
you hadn't, simply run the installer again to recreate it (be sure to first
connect any required USB-to-serial hardware). It is safe to run the
installer as many times as you wish, although you should not run it while
you have jobs printing. Running the installer multiple times will not
install multiple copies of any files.
If you need to create a new serial printing queue with special settings you
may find the CUPS web admin to be the easiest method of setup.
Printing via AppleTalk:
If your ImageWriter II or ImageWriter LQ supports AppleTalk (via the
optional AppleTalk accessory card) you can print over a network. To print
via AppleTalk from Mac OS X Jaguar you will need to use some type of
LocalTalk converter, such as a hardware Ethernet-to-LocalTalk bridge, or an
old ethernet-equipped Power Mac running the Apple LocalTalk bridge software.
Regardless of your LocalTalk conversion method, this installer will create a
printer queue for each AppleTalk-enabled ImageWriter that is visible on the
network during installation. As with the serial printer queues, if you do
not need any of the automatically created queues, simply delete them from
Print Center.

AFAIK the Stealth Ports are identical to the Beige G3's built-in ports.
Apple provides *very little* support for the serial ports (since only the
first of the G3s actually has them and no one sells RS232 equipment anymore)
so I wouldn't be surprised with quirky behaviour.

I would still turn it off -- AppleTalk has always caused OS 9 headaches so
Classic won't be any different. As for auto turn on/off enable/disable --
that is not possible. Classic doesn't actually enable it by default. It
merely takes its cue from OS X. If OS X has AT turned on (off by default)
then Classic has it on. To turn off AT in Classic, turn it off in OS X (it
doesn't really make sense to have it on in one and off in another).

Check out EBay... While you're at it, look for a LocalTalk to Ethernet
bridge -- I saw one go for $20 not too long ago.
Ok, ten seconds worth of searching... II/LQ AppleTalk option
<http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2732252706&category=4608>
14 USD with a BUY IT NOW available on it.
LocalTalk-Ethernet Bridges: in completed items it seems like they're 20-30
USD. Of course, if you have an old Quadra or the likes sitting around with
an ethernet port you could set up a software bridge using Apple's
software...

I'd be surprised if it ever did load. As I've said before, Classic is not
allowed direct access to hardware. A serial port driver would be such a
beast.

The fact that it *nearly* printed is promising. Something's going right
there but now you have to find out what's going wrong.
