That's the way they come. They are blank because you haven't put
anything on them. You need to 'burn' the CD. Burn is the usual word
used to describe the action of placing files onto a recordable CD.
Many people use an application called Toast which can 'burn' to a CD.
In OS X there is a program called Disc Burn (or Burner? - I use Toast)
which lets you do this too. If you have an Apple machine that came
with a CD capable of burning CD's then the program will work. If you
have added a CD burner later, the Apple program may or may not work
with your particular model CD burner.
To burn a CD you use a program that can burn. The program provides an
interface (an area on screen) where you can drag and drop the files you
want to burn to the blank CD. The original files will remain on your
hard drive untouched. The program will keep a running total of the
space used up. In your case its photos from past discussion on the
list. After you get to 700 MB of pictures the program will tell you
there's no more room. At that point you tell it to 'burn' the CD and
it then 'burns' the files to the blank CD. Once a disc is 'burned'
(depending on how it is done but let's keep it simple for now) you
can't add anything more to it. Which is where I think the term
'burned' comes from (because a laser light is used to etch the little
pits onto the surface of the CD that the CD can read and programs can
interpret). Once it used it's used (or burned). If something goes
wrong in the burning process then that particular blank CD is not any
good for anything (computer related any way - you could use it as a
coaster), some people will say they the CD is toast (which is how I
think the company that uses that name for their program came up with it
in the first place), You have to love computer terminology!
If this is totally unclear click on Help, type in 'burn a CD' or 'copy
files to a CD' and see what information comes up.
If you are using OS 9 you'll likely need to get a program to do your
burning. Toast is a good one if you can find an OS 9 version.
