The video format that is preferred by iMovie is DV which is what you  
get from mini-DV or digital 8.  If you have analog tapes such as high  
8 they can usually be translated to DV by using a mini DV camcorder  
as a bridge between the computer and the source camera.  MPEG 2 can't  
be edited using iMovie so you would need to have some device that  
will translate the MPEG 2 stream to DV.
