[muglo] .avi Converting

Hi All,
Was wondering what software I need to convert a .avi video file to a 
QuickTime one that iMovie will recognize and import it.
.avi is the video file that my HP digital camera produces, QT plays but 
can't use in iMovie.
Any suggestions?
OS 10.2.8, iBook Clamshell, 576 MB RAM.
