Did you ever get that data from your backup drive copied onto your new
internal, Ian? There are two or three ways at least to do it and maybe the
LaCie techies have already sorted it out for you, but if not, here are a couple
of ideas:
easiest thing, assuming your LaCie drive is Firewire-friendly, is to connect
it in target mode with the new internal. Here's how (straight out of the Mac
help screen):
1. Shut down the computer to be used as a disk. Leave the other computer on.
2. Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable.
3. Start up the computer to be used as a disk, then open System Preferences,
click Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start it up while holding
down the T key.)
4. A disk icon appears on the desktop of the other computer [your internal
drive].
5. Transfer files by dragging them to and from the disk.
6. Eject the disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash
icon changes to an Eject icon.)
7. On the computer you used as a disk, push the power button to shut it down,
and then disconnect the FireWire cable.
Alternatively, and slightly trickier, you can use a backup program like
SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to get around the problem of Apple objecting
to your installing system software on two different disks at the same time.
Running either of these programs, you can set them either to copy just the
system software from your new internal drive to your external one without
disturbing the data files that are already there. Or, you can set them to copy
just the data files from your external to your internal without disturbing the
existing system files. You do have to be careful about specifying exactly
what's to be copied and what's to be left alone, though.
SuperDuper! is yet fully compatible with Time Machine ? it should be, within
days now ? but it can still make bootable copies; you just need to temporarily
turn Time Machine off on the drive you're copying, then turn it back on
afterward if you like.
As yet another alternative, if you're still having the problem and are leery
about trying either of these ideas, you could bring both drives to the Feb. 5
meeting and we'll be happy to sort things out there.
Cheers
Doug Bale
