I think you're getting your wireless wires crossed there ;-).

"WiFi" refers to 802.11b/g/a (b&g aka AirPort; radio) networks and
they are restricted to a few 100 meters (without high powered gear =E1
la Terry Steeper), usually involving computer-computer communications
(e.g. browser-server, client-file server).

Newer mobile phones use BlueTooth (radio) for low-power, SHORT range
communication (on the order of meters) among phones or between phones
and computers/printers/etc, but, unless things have taken off on that
realm, it's not really worth it for coffee shops to support that
technology because... Mobile phones also have their own cellular
networks (microwaves) which can be used anywhere there's a digital
signal.
