[muglo] Re: Wireless Deal at FutureShop And... [OT] Escarpment Telecom as an alternative to the LD companies

For anyone looking for an inexpensive wireless network option, you might
take a look at Future Shop. There is an SMC wireless router for $49.99 after
immediate and mail-in rebates.(From one of their flyers of the past few
days... I'm not sure which one precisely) I believe this is a "g" version
meaning 54 mbs.

For home, I bought the SMC "Barricade" model about two months ago for $79.99
after rebates and it has worked flawlessly. Make sure the box identifies
that it is Mac compatible. (Future Shop will likely take it back if it
isn't, but confirm this too. They are very good this way.)

I just got my $50 rebate today which was supposed to come after 4-6 weeks. I
was starting to wonder if it would come at all. Main thing is they follow
through and on that basis, I don't mind suggesting that you consider this
deal. (No, I have no affiliation with Future Shop or SMC)

I'm running an old 233 MHz G3 on 10.2.8 at home and got an Aria extreme PCI
card from MacWarehouse in T.O.. According to the box this board is
compatible with JUST ABOUT every Mac from the Power Mac 7300 on, as well as
many compatibles.

It took me about 20 minutes to set it all up and plug in the card. I started
the Mac (the longest part of the process, at 233 MHz :-( ), went to the
Airport preferences panel, turned on the software and voila, it was
working... that simple! (If anyone tries this deal and it turns out to not
work, you might like to pass that on here.)

Their ad says there are only 1100 of these units across the country and the
deal won't last long... Usually they change weekly and sometimes faster than
that.

This is certainly cheaper than Apple's Airport Extreme.

Off Topic:

Rich, I certainly understand your sentiments and appreciate your point of
view. I don't think that this list is enhanced in any way by this type of
diatribe. Off Topic discussions aren't necessarily a bad thing if they have
a general interest, are informative or perhaps express a poignant view.
Unfortunately these "Bushisms" do more to irritate than stimulate.

Eric has an impressive knowledge of things Mac and it's great when he
applies himself in this area. But there times when he is brash and
irritating. A bit more objectivity and humility in his expressions would go
a long way to making him seem more like a guru than a hot-head.
