Canon support can be rang up on 1-800-OK CANON (652-2666)

A quick google ('canon m501') gives these 2 avenues...

1./
MacUser site suggested a restart following deletion of the following from
/Library/Caches and ~/Library/Caches:
 com.apple.LaunchServices.LocalCache.csstore and/or
 com.apple.LaunchServices.UserCache.csstore

and

2./
Site http://copieurs.free.fr/canon/codepancop.htm which has

E041
Ensemble magasin papier
 - Moteur de magasin papier d=E9fectueux (M501).
 - D=E9tecteur de position d'=E9l=E9vateur d=E9fectueux (Q503).
 - Carte de commande d=E9fectueuse.

Which my quick translation to English gives...

E041
Paper Tray Cartridge
 - Defective feed motor
 - Defective position sensor
 - Defective controller card
