For a picture of the screen hold the following down, all at the same time,

APPLE - SHIFT - 3

For a portion of the screen hold down,

APPLE - SHIFT - 4

This will give you a target type icon. Move this to one corner of the picture 
you want to save then click and draw the icon across the picture until the 
grayed area covers what you want to capture and then release. You should hear a 
shutter click. You then have the photo and you can click and drag it into 
iPhoto.
